We re-created our own version of a chalkboard wall we saw on Fixer Upper.
Scroll down if you want to see how we did it... and how we made it our own!!

We had almost finished our daughter's "big girl" room. The only spot in the room I had left was a pretty massive blank space in the wall. One night we were watching a re-run of Fixer Upper and I noticed they put this amazing chalk-board playhouse on a wall in one of the rooms they finished. So I recruited my favorite DIY-er and frankly the main reason any of this stuff gets done, my lovely husband, and we took it to the drawing board.
We had a lot of what we would need for the project at the house:
- Nail gun
- Miter Saw
- Paint supplies (brush/pan/tape)
- Chalkboard paint from another project (black)
- Measuring tape
- 3 ft. level
- Stud finder
Home Depot:
- 8ft. 1x2inch cedar boards (we used 8)
- Nails for the nail gun
- White cup hooks (1.25 inch)
Hobby Lobby:
- wooden box for "window box"
- greenery
- green wreath
First Step: FIND STUDS. Measure out and draw your house to your specific size. Make sure to draw the side lines for the house on top of studs in the wall.
There was a certain amount of space I wanted the playhouse to take up, so I drew it the size that worked for us. The level was crucial in this part of the project, it helped me to make the sides perfectly straight, while keeping them on the studs.
Second Step: We (my husband) painted the square with the black chalk paint. It did show up blue at first, but dried totally black. It took about 4 coats, letting them dry in between.
Third Step: Measure / mark / cut your cedar boards. I wanted to make sure they all met at 45 degree angles, so I made sure to specify that. Our base for the house was around 48 x 47in.
Fourth Step: Using your nail gun, install the boards! I loved the look of these boards so I didn't want to stain them or do anything to them.

Next we (I use we LOOSELY) needed to install the window. We mostly had to just free style this, I measure out a size I thought would look good for the window. It ended up being 11 inches by 13 inches (installed about 5 inches out from either side).
Most people would just leave it at that! But I am not most people... I MUST ADD MORE!!!

I used tiny white cup hooks about every 2 feet above the wood for the roof (screwed into the wall/not the wood). I used this hold the stems of the greenery in place. A single nail to hang the wreath and the greenery was finished! We hung the window box below and added some fake flowers and chalk.
... AFTER having it for a few weeks now, I will say you may want to put a rug below the chalkboard. Probably a ROOKIE mistake, but now I know!!
Other than that, we love this thing! So fun to play on, and such a cute feature of the room. Bis sister wants one now too so we will see!
